Route – Day 08

Day 08 – Kure (Kure Station) to Onomichi (Onomichi Station)

83km – A full day along the coast of Hiroshima Prefecture, we’ll see stunning views of the Seto Inland Sea as we cut through valleys and plains with an abundance of mountains in the backdrop. Our second rest day will give us some energy before the final mammoth phase begins.

Another day on the saddle punctuated by a few early climbs, that will smooth out as the day goes on. The reward at the end will be a well earned rest day before we push onwards to the island of Shikoku.

While the route itself doesn’t pass through any particularly well known sights, we’ll still get the see some parts of the beautiful Japanese countryside and more of the Seto Inland Sea as we ride several sections right alongside the water.

We’ll end in the city of Onomichi, known for 2 things: The Temple Walk and the Shimanami Kaido. While we may spend a little time exploring some of the quaint temples at the end of our ride, the main reason we came to Onomichi is the Shimanami Kaido, probably the biggest inspiration for this entire adventure.

Highlights

  • Mountain and Sea views
  • Onomichi Temple Walk
  • Starting point for the Shimanami Kaido

Food & Accommodation

After leaving Kure and the Hiroshima City region behind us, we’ll travel through some smaller towns, which will give us the opportunity to try out some smaller local places to eat. Our ride will end in Onomichi, but due to a lack of suitable accommodation in the city, we’ll jump in the van and ride to nearby Fukuyama to rest for the next 36 hours. We’ll relax with the local Yakitori before exploring the during our second rest day.
